A beautifully crafted peg solitaire board game by Amazing Africa Gifts with pegs crafted as Africa's Big Five Wildlife. The board has a frame of intricately designed African scenes and wildlife. The solitaire pieces are initially sculpted by hand, then crafted in moulded polystone and finally hand painted as true pieces of animal art. This solitaire board game captures the Big Five African wildlife and will be a perfect gift for that special person, or as a collector's item to spoil yourself with.
The standard game fills the entire board with a peg, which are the Big 5 game pegs
The objective is, making valid moves, to empty the entire board except for a solitary peg in the central hole.
Made from high quality and durable polystone with hand painted peg pieces and board, this is truly a piece of animal art.
Amazing Africa Gifts crafting details
The unique peg solitaire pieces and board are all crafted and had cast in durable polystone (crushed stone and resin). Thereafter they are all hand-painted with beautiful detail by our African artists in South Africa.
The pieces and board of the set were hand-carved by one of our artists. Limited life moulds are then created for hand casting of the solitaire pegs and board from polystone. The pegs (solitaire pieces) and board frame are then hand painted by our team of South African artists using Windsor and Newton oil paints.
The board has a felt base underneath to ensure durability.
The full chess set takes approximately four (4) hours for our craftspeople and artists to create with some time between for drying of the paint.

More about the Big Five African Wildlife
The Big Five consists of the Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant, and Buffalo and was first used by big game hunters who hunted in Africa. These five magnificent animals are often described as the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot in Africa, but more recently has become the term used for African safari tour operators and game lodges.
An interesting fact, South African banknotes (currency is the Rand) released in the 1990 and later notes, feature a different big 5 animal on each denomination.
The Big Five are not just found in Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia Zimbabwe), but can also be found in Angola, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Malawi.
Any visit to Africa must include a safari to witness these truly amazing animals, and then, of course, you can take home our Big Five range of gifts to keep that memory close to your heart!
More about the game of Peg Solitaire:
Peg Solitaire is also called Solo Noble, and is originally thought to have originated in Madagascar. A similar game called Bainvita is also found in India and surrounding countries. First evidence of written rules of the game along with board design have been found to be published in the August 1687 edition of the French literary magazine Mercure galant.
The standard game uses pegs to fill the entire board except for the central hole, and the player aims to make valid moves to empty the entire board until only one peg remains.
A valid move is to jump a peg orthogonally over an adjacent peg into a hole two positions away and then to remove the jumped peg.
There are two types of boards, the English and the European. Our sets use the English Board and does not have the additional four holes of a European Board.
Some complex mathematical strategies have been developed to master this game, but to be honest we just enjoy playing it to relax and enjoy ourselves, especially with these beautifully crafted animal pieces and designed board.
