Amazing Africa Gifts brings you this truly unique backgammon set of the highest quality, with beautifully crafted playing discs boasting gorgeous depictions of African wildlife, a board based on an African shield and spear, and dice including a doubling cube.

Backgammon attracts both collectors and dedicated players, and this African work of art is a true collector's item that will make the perfect gift for a loved one who plays, or even for yourself!

Backgammon is a truly addictive strategy game involving two players who take turns rolling the dice and moving their discs according to the number shown on each die. The ultimate goal is to move all 15 discs off the board. Like chess, it’s a game steeped in strategy and requires anticipation of the opponent’s moves.

Amazing Africa Gifts crafting details

Each set includes two sets of 15 playing discs (for each player’s side) and dice, as well as a high quality wooden folding box and board. The wooden box is painted black with highly durable gloss paints and lined with soft felt as a lovely finishing touch.

The playing discs are all crafted from polystone (crushed stone and resin) using hand-cast molds created from original artworks created by our artists. The playing discs are then hand-painted in beautiful detail with Winsor and Newton oil paints by our artists in South Africa.

The wooden backgammon board is treated to meet all international import requirements.

The entire set takes approximately ten (14) hours for our craftspeople and artists to create with some time allocated in between for drying of the paint.

Budget Options:

Our African animal backgammon set was originally produced only in what we now call the large set, but to help customers who are looking for a lower cost gift or those with limited space, we introduced the small set as well. Playing discs are proportionate in size to the playing board.

More about the game of Backgammon

Backgammon is an ancient game - in fact, archaeological discoveries over the game in what was Sumer (Mesopotamia in the Middle East) are over 5000 years old! “Tavli” is the oldest board game with rules known to be almost identical to backgammon and was described by Byzantine Emperor Zeno (AD 476-491). Tavli means “table” or “board” in Byzantine Greek.

In modern times, the game “jeux de tables” (“game of tables”) first appeared in France during the 11th century and was often played for gambling, so much so that Louis IX banned his court officials and subjects from playing.

Backgammon is a strategy game that factors in a random element of luck owing to the fact that players cannot control on what number the die lands. With each roll of the dice, players must choose from a variety of different options for moving their discs and try to anticipate counter-moves made by the opponent.

The objective of the game is to be the first to “bear off”, which means to be the first to move all fifteen discs off the board.
