Amazing Africa Gifts brings you this truly unique Backgammon set of the highest quality, beautifully crafted African wildlife discs, a board themed after tribal African shield and spear with vibrant dice rolling cups and dice including the doubling cube. The discs and dice cups are hand designed and then crafted our of durable polystone and finally hand painted by South African artists.

Backgammon attracts dedicated collectors and players, and this African work of art is a true collector's item that will make the perfect gift.

Backgammon is a strategy game that is truly addictive to play and involves two players taking alternate turns to roll dice and move their discs according to the number shown on each die with the ultimate goal being to move all fifteen discs off the board. Of course, it is a bit more in depth and involves some clever strategy and anticipation of your opponents move.

Amazing Africa Gifts crafting details

Each set includes two sets of 15 playing discs for each side as well as dice throwing cup and dice, as well as a high quality wooden folding box and board. The wooden box is painted black and inside on the playing board, there is soft felt to bring about the finishing touch.

The playing discs and dice cup are all crafted from polystone (crushed stone and resin) and hand-painted with beautiful detail by our African artists in South Africa.

The discs and throwing cup of this beautiful set were hand-carved by one of our artists. Limited life moulds are then created for hand casting of the chess pieces from polystone. The discs and cup are then hand painted by our team of South African artists using Windsor and Newton oil paints.

The wooden backgammon board is treated to meet all international import requirements. The inside of the box and board is covered in felt including the disc storage space.

The backgammon set takes approximately ten (10) hours for our craftspeople and artists to create with some time between for drying of the paint.

More about the game of Backgammon

Backgammon is an ancient game, in fact, archeological discoveries in what was Sumer (Mesopotamia in the Middle East) date the board game back nearly 5,000 years! “Tavli” is the oldest board game with rules known to be almost identical to backgammon and is described in an epigram of Byzantine Emporer Zeno (AD 476-491). Tavli means “table” or “board” in Byzantine Greek.

In western culture, the game “jeux de tables” (Game of Tables) first appeared in France during the 11th century and was often played for monetary gambling, so much so that Louis IX banned his court officials and subjects from playing.

Backgammon is a strategy game that factors in a random “luck” element due to the throwing of dice, but over a full game, the best strategist wins. With each roll of the dice, players must choose from a variety of different options for moving their discs and try to anticipate counter-moves by the opponent.

The objective of the game is to be the first to “bear off”, which means to be the first to move all fifteen discs off the board.
